About this deal

However the cover keeps going on about the 'stunning final twist' which kind of implied, to me, that there'd be some huge reveal on or near the last page. Yes, the plot itself is great and in some ways really wonderful shown, but over the half of this thriller I didn´t know exactly with whom I was dealing. Things get even worse though, when a violent death changes her life for ever, and puts her at risk as she tries to find out the truth.

The plot follows the results of the shooting, the story of the shooter and his "friends", a young pregnant woman looking for answers and a gangster seeking revenge, This is a book that will keep you reading. There were a couple of points where I got characters mixed up with each other, but this didn't happen all that often. Now that he’s sold enough drugs to support a girlfriend and a baby son, his mate Easy Dennison offers him a boost up the next rung of the ladder. Several story lines were not brought to a satisfactory conclusion, and the book ended extremely abruptly. When your stuff is being adapted and you get David Morrissey or MyAnna Buring you relax, because whatever they create will be great and it will have a wider audience than your books. The victim's partner, a police officer on maternity leave as she's 8 months pregnant, is also keen to find out more, especially as it appears that her partner was keeping secrets from her. That said, this was a pretty good read because there were lots of twists and turns, enough to keep the story moving. This treatment clearly still rankles with the author, who adds: "The Sky thing will always be a niggle with me because Thorne is my main guy and I have written 14 books with him. And now there’s a question mark over who the father of her unborn child is – something which looks like it will tear Helen and Paul apart. The cover of the German edition looked so weird that it made me curious enough to take it out of the shelf and read the back text.

Billingham gives himself a big canvas to work on and manages to fill it, making the most of even minor characters, I’m not sure the denouement satisfied me completely, but this is a novel which kept me intrigued and gripped throughout. For the first hundred pages, we're introduced to a bunch of characters and their lives before the crime in question. While an investigation into a murdered teenager might not exactly be cause for celebration – on the surface of things – Weeks should be happy.

This incident has wide-ranging consequences for a large cast including the shooter, the ageing gangster planning a deadly revenge, and the victim’s pregnant wife just two weeks away from giving birth. The novel's opening is disrespectful to the reader by introducing a mystery, then waiting a long, long while till the story spins back towards that mystery.
