She was also reluctant to take the part as she did not want to take her clothes off; however, she had financial problems at the time as a result of bad investment decisions by her accountant. Andrew Spicer has written that "he [Klinger] sensed its potential to imbue the British crime thriller with the realism and violence of its American counterparts".

It’s a taboo the film was unafraid to cross in the telling of its story (note, Gerard Damiano’s own game-changer, Deep Throat, wouldn’t debut until the next year). He waited hours until the sun began setting to capture the overcast shadowy lighting seen in the film. Though he came north ostensibly for his brother’s funeral, he now begins snooping around, asking questions, and it soon arouses the attention and eventually the ire of a number of local underworld figures. Whilst the movie changed some elements of Lewis’ novel – notably resetting the story in Newcastle and the nature of the climax – it retains the core plot progression and atmosphere. He’s left the neon lights and mod lifestyle of Soho behind to come north to his hometown for a funeral—his brother Frank’s.A devout Roman Catholic, Mosley was concerned about taking part in such a violent film with depictions of criminal behaviour, and consulted his priest over the moral implications.

Locations along the east coast of England had been scouted by Hodges and Klinger in the spring of 1970, to find a landscape that suggested a "hard, deprived background". So when his older brother dies in a car accident back home in Newcastle, even his bosses are nervous about his trip up north for the funeral. Indeed, the film did have an old-world charm to it… even as it swung that shotgun down on to someone’s head. If the overheads were anything like related to what that tight bastard I’d been working for was paying me. Much of it is set in Soho, then the cosmopolitan vice capital of London and the center of the Fletchers’ criminal organization.US publication Box Office gave a cautiously approving review, describing the film as "nasty, violent and sexy all at once". Back to the novel: it wasn't too easy for me to read it, because english is not my mother's language, but I've succeeded and I liked it a lot. In addition to that, perhaps the most famous liberty the movie took was in its transposition of the story from Scunthorpe to the even more grimily picturesque Newcastle.
