I did struggle a bit to read the book and i did zone out to parts of it but can't really tell why it made me feel like that. great book and account of what it is like for care workers that work in care homes and are more often than not considered the lowest form of employment. The only problem is that he would read the sign and “then spend the next 14 hours… washing old knobs for minimum wage. The author is obviously highly intelligent, proactive and caring, whilst not shying away from his own weaknesses. The book is fine, it doesn’t give any real insight into the profession other than it’s underpaid and hard.

He has a wonderful turn of phrase, both serious and comic, realising that gallows humour is an essential release-valve in a demanding job witnessing decay and detachment. I'm very grateful they've taken a punt on me (a recovering Crack 'ead Quaker) and my book (a book that includes a line about swallowing boobs). I wish Pope a major success with this polemic on the current state of some of the private health care sector.Publishers Penguin Random House have struck a deal with Expectation, the production company behind shows such as Alma's Not Normal and In My Skin, which will see the book adapted for television.

These characters provide much of the entertainment and humour of the book – as with the title quote, in which an elderly lady decides to postpone her death until after bingo has finished – but crucially, Lonergan portrays his subjects without caricature or cliché. I'll Die After Bingo, the book in which comedian Pope Lonergan talks about working in a care home for the elderly, is being adapted for television. This book is brilliant - an amazing mix of dedication, empathy, laughs-out-loud and outrage about how the current government has abandoned the care system for elderly people to hedge funders and others who just want to make money out of the vulnerable. I'll Die After Bingo is his tough yet hilarious, intelligent and honest account of 9 ½ years caring of for the elderly. Physical and mental deterioration is not something most people are comfortable witnessing, which is why so many elderly people end up in care homes.Fair play, the guy has had a tough life and a tough job, but the book was overly flamboyant in terminology and description. In this book are stories of old people rid of their inhibitions by dementia, of profit focused organisations under-paying their poorly trained staff who despite all (mostly) still try and give a good standard of care, and much on the practical realities of aging - bodies that don't work as well, and support needs that rid people of their dignity. The bottom-line watching corporate model is gaining traction, meaning less money going into actual care, and more carer burn out. A truly refreshing perspective of work and life in the care industry with an unapologetic sense of humour in its tapestry that only Pope could deliver both sensitively and with the full force of a frying pan.

Unfortunately I found this book disappointing and it was more about the authors opinions on the care system.I appreciate Covid came after he had left but it seems a little odd for a book about the care sector to be published in 2022 and not reference it at all. Pope Lonergan is a stand up comedian from Essex, a recovering drug addict, and was for over a decade a care assistant in a variety of Care Homes. I'll Die After Bingo is his tough yet hilarious, intelligent and honest account of 9 ½ years spent caring for the elderly.
