We test every televisions we review thoroughly over an extended period of time. We use industry standard tests to compare features properly. We’ll always tell you what we find. We never, ever, accept money to review a product. The Sony A80J benefits from the company’s imaging expertise by combining the strengths of OLED with its new Cognitive Processor XR that’s designed to emulate how the human eye actually sees the real world. Those are some fairly lofty claims, but Sony knows a thing or two about picture quality and the new processor delivers the goods. For general sharpness and detail, the A80J more or less matches the flagship A90J, and that puts it head and shoulders above most rivals in those regards. Every shot is magnificently crisp, but you don’t get any of the sense of exaggeration that you do from some rivals that take a similar approach. That crispness combines with the set’s hugely impressive ability to dig up the finest of details to make images brilliantly lifelike, whether it’s a wide landscape shot or an intense close-up of a character’s face. The Sony A80J OLED has decent HDR brightness. As with SDR, there's a lot of variation in brightness across different scenes, in part due to the aggressive ABL. HDR content still pops out well thanks to its near-infinite contrast ratio, but extremely bright highlights and large bright scenes don't stand out as well as they should. The A80J is just as adept at handling color. In The Rise of Skywalker, the festival on Pasaana looked rich and varied, with the rainbow of hues of its celebrants’ robes surging (but not too much) against the bland sand and brown mountains of that desert world. The mid-20th-century, palette-busting fantasia of the new Disney-Pixar film Luca really popped, in the aquamarine tidal waters and the lush above-waves Italian Riviera landscapes alike.

Elsewhere there are a few picture modes to choose from in Netflix Calibrated Mode that presents titles as they were mastered in the studio. The A80J is certified for IMAX Enhanced, tuning its picture and sound in accordance with IMAX’s standards. BRAVIA Core is a streaming service that presents titles at a bitrate that’s close to the quality of 4K Blu-rays and it supports IMAX Enhanced standard too.
These measurements are after calibration, using the ‘Custom’ Picture Mode, with the ‘Expert 1’ Color Temperature, Peak Luminance set to ‘High’, and Brightness at its max. The BRAVIA XR range also fixes one of the biggest issues we find with most TVs: terrible user interfaces. They do this by utilizing the new Google TV platform, the next evolution of Android TV. The interface removes the need for you to constantly jump between apps when scrolling for content by offering a single overview of your recommendations from all your streaming services. XR TRILUMINOS Pro: produces a wider palette of colours with an enhanced range of hue and saturation, allowing natural shades and precise detail.I measured input lag at 16.3ms, which in the grand scheme of things is very good, though short of Samsung and LG, with even Panasonic ahead in the gaming stakes with their performance and features. The A80J, by comparison, is less immediately striking but a good bit more accommodating, with its fairly dainty feet positional in either a wide, narrow, or soundbar stance. When they’re in the narrow placement, the set has a footprint that’s a very reasonable 69cm (27.3 inches) wide. Of course, if you’re not a hardcore gamer (or even a gamer at all), these HDMI limitations will likely be of no concern to you, and that’s entirely correct. And if you’re a hardcore movie and TV show addict, you’ll be pleased to know that the A80J is, too. We changed the subtype from WRGB to WOLED as it's more accurate and more consistent with other TVs. One of the biggest selling points for all the new BRAVIAs is the new Cognitive Processor XR which understands how we watch TV, cross referencing everything from where we’re focussing to what we’re listening to. They then analyse the information using next-generation Cognitive intelligence to optimise every pixel, frame and scene to create the most realistic, true to life image possible.

The Sony A80J is a mid-range marvel that delivers great pictures and extensive features at an affordable price
We tested the 55-inch Sony A80J(XR55A80J), which is also available in 65-inch(XR65A80J) and 77-inch (XR77A80J)sizes. These results are also valid for those models, but the 77-inch model has a slightly different screen coating. The A80J is also sold as the A80CJ at Costco, but only the 65 and 77-inch models. Size I watched a number of different types of video, from action movies to comedies to musicals, and had trouble detecting much of what Sony indicated I’d hear. When I closed my eyes, I was wrong at least as many times as I was correct about where the sound “should have” been coming from, and I’m not positive I heard anything that could be mistaken for full-room surround sound. At least the setup process, which the remote’s microphone measuring sounds produced by the TV to allow it to optimize its performance, is simple and takes mere seconds to complete. If you end up not liking what you hear from the TV, your best bet may be investing in one of the best soundbars. The Sony A80J is the mid-range model in the company’s 2021 OLED lineup, and while it doesn’t include the brighter XR Contrast Pro panel found on the high-end Master Series A90J, it’s powered by the same super-smart Cognitive Processor XR chip.
